Our County Board members care about what their constituents have to say and respond to all comments and letters. The County Board generally meets the third Saturday of the month with a follow-up recessed session the following Tuesday. The agenda along with instructions for speaking at a County Board meeting are posted on the website before the meeting. On Saturdays, the County Board hears public comments on issues not on the agenda starting at 8:30 AM and comments on the Public Hearing Items starting no earlier than 9:00 AM. Comments from members of the public –except for civic associations (which have more time)–are limited to 2 or 3 minutes.
To clearly and concisely share your thoughts to the County Board have your comments prepared in advance and practice a few times to make sure they fit within the time allotted (you will be cut off if not).
- Be specific on what you are asking in your first sentence– “I am concerned about … and would like the County to…”
- The time goes fast– focus on just two or three key points explaining your position
- Make it personal — let them know why this topic matters to you
- Be polite and non-confrontational — Board members are committed to acting in the best interest of the County and take all views into account.
