EcoAction Arlington, Viriginia Cooperative Extension and Thrive Arlington came together last Wednesday to honor this year’s graduates from the 2012-13 Arlington Energy Masters training program and to celebrate the accomplishments of all program volunteers since it’s inception in 2011. Oh my, was there a lot to talk about!
Since the start of the program program volunteers have been busy!’ Volunteers have completed work in 257 low-moderate income apartments in Arlington resulting in a pretty significant impact:
The work:
- 333 faucet aerators installed
- 203 low-flow showerheads installed
- 196 toilet tank tummies installed
- 1,644 old light bulbs replaced with CFLs
The impact?
- 4,551,890 gallons of water saved*
- 75267 kilowatt hours of energy saved*
- 93429 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions avoided*
- $65,302 in reduced utility costs*
Many, many thanks to all of the volunteers, in this year’s class, and the class of 2011-13. Over the past two years, nearly 60 volunteers have contributed more than 4,000 volunteer hours to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of affordable housing units and have conducted 40 home energy assessments throughout the county.
Modeled after the successful master gardeners training program, the Energy Masters program trains a corps of volunteers in energy efficiency and weatherization techniques for improving energy and water efficiency. In addition to attending the training sessions, volunteers contribute 60 hours of community service within the year to become certified Energy Masters. Applications are now being accepted for the 2013-14 program year. Adult and student (high school and college) apprenticeship tracks available.
